What is Double Peoria?

Double Peoria, also known as New Peoria, is a handicap calculation method designed to allow players of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced, to compete on equal footing. Its key feature is that it bridges skill gaps, giving everyone a chance to win.

While widely used in Japan due to its ease of handicap calculation, it's not stipulated in the Rules of Golf, nor is it officially established by any golf organization like the R&A, USGA, or JGA. Furthermore, there are multiple calculation methods.

Calculation Method

"Compekun" uses the following method, which is considered the most common.

■Hidden Holes
12 holes are selected from 18 holes (6 holes each for the first 9 holes and the second 9 holes so that the total par is 48)
■Handicap Calculation Formula
(Score of Hidden Holes × 3 ÷ 2 - [Total Par of 18 Holes]) × 80% = Handicap
  • Sometimes "× 3 ÷ 2" is replaced with "× 1.5". The calculation result is the same.

  • In some cases, an upper limit is set for the score of the hidden holes based on the value of Par. For example, the "double par cut" setting uses a multiple of Par as the upper limit. Not setting an upper limit is considered advantageous for beginners.

  • In some cases, an upper limit is set for the handicap. The common limit is "36". Setting it to unlimited is considered advantageous for beginners.
