What are some tips for creating pairings?

Creating pairings for a golf tournament is a crucial task for the organizer, yet many find the process challenging.

Commonly recommended strategies include:

  • For corporate tournaments, placing superiors or guests of honor in the first group.
  • For groups of participants, keeping them in the same group for casual "fun" tournaments, or splitting them up for competitive events.

These approaches are useful when tailored to the tournament's purpose. Another effective strategy applicable to any tournament is balancing skill levels. By checking participants' handicaps (HDCP) or average scores and ensuring the combined totals for each group are roughly equal, you can prevent pace-of-play issues—such as some groups moving quickly while others lag behind, creating excessive gaps between groups.

"Compekun" offers multiple automatic pairing features, making it easy to create the optimal lineup.

Pairing by HDCP/Average Score

This is one of the automatic pairing features available when creating groups. It balances the skill level of each group. This method requires inputting each participant's HDCP or average score. The diagram below illustrates the process: participants are listed vertically by HDCP (lowest to highest), and pairings are determined by cycling through the list.

Random Pairing

We also offer a random pairing feature that adds a fun, game-like element to the process. This is a great option for casual tournaments among friends.
